Hawaii Educators Make the Difference

i-SAFE Inc. is partnering with the Hawaii Department of Education (HDOE) to provide educators in all of its schools across the Islands with Gold level Internet safety curriculum materials. The Gold level is the comprehensive approach to teaching e-Safety in today's Web 2.0 world -- safety, responsibility and security online. At the Gold level, Hawaii educators also have access to curriculum from i-SAFE's E-Rate Subscription Package, designed specifically to be consistent with the "Broadband Data Improvement Act" / "Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act," which became law in 2008. U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (HI), a leading voice of Internet safety education, sponsored the legislation. The law mandates that schools applying for reimbursements through the federal E-Rate program for costs associated with Internet service, Internet access or internal connections must teach students about "appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms and cyber bullying awareness and response." NOTE: While legislation has passed, at this time neither the FCC nor USAC/SLD have issued implementing rules/guidelines.

The Gold level curriculum lessons promote critical thinking. The lessons are grade-specific covering the following e-Safety topics:

  • Appropriate Online Behavior
  • Cyber Bullying
  • Cyber Community Citizenship
  • Cyber Security
  • Digital Literacy
  • Intellectual Property
  • Personal Safety Online
  • Predator Identification
  • Social Networking

Getting Started

It is necessary for the Technology Coordinator or designee from each school in the HDOE system to download and complete the Subscription Teachers Action Table (STAT). Download STAT Now. Each school's Technology Coordinator must fill in the information for all tabs of the STAT spreadsheet, and e-mail it to subscription@isafe.org. An i-SAFE customer service representative will acknowledge that we have received your STAT sheet and immediately begin reviewing the spreadsheet to ensure we have everything we need. IMPORTANT: Teachers cannot access the curriculum without a completed STAT sheet from your school's Technology Coordinator. Therefore, if you would like to teach the i-SAFE lessons in your classroom but are not named on a STAT, please contact your school's Technology Coordinator so that you may be added and have online access to the i-SAFE curriculum.

Accessing the Curriculum

Once the school's Technology Coordinator has completed the STAT sheet -- and verified through i-SAFE -- the designated teachers have online access to the i-SAFE curriculum. They can download copies of i-SAFE curriculum from their "My Info" page. Here's how:

  1. At the upper right hand corner of the i-SAFE Web site (any page, including the home page) log in with your user name and password. You will automatically be taken to your personal My Info page.
  2. Find the Curriculum section on your My Info page.
  3. Select grade level.
  4. Choose from the list of topics (designated E-Rate lessons are clearly labeled).
  5. Click to download the curriculum.

The curriculum materials found in i-SAFE's Gold Package, including lesson plans and video files, are the intellectual property of i-SAFE Inc. Teachers are permitted to make copies to share with other teachers at the same school or another HDOE school, however any other form of unauthorized use of this material, or selling i-SAFE copyrighted intellectual property is against the law.

Professional Development Training

Certification is not required to teach i-SAFE curriculum in the classroom. However, teachers who want to review a specific subject of interest or learn more about all e-Safety topics can watch i-LEARN. i-LEARN is an informative series of video modules covering i-SAFE's core topics, posted at http://isafe.org/ilearn. There is no charge to watch the i-LEARN modules. It is mandatory to complete the i-LEARN program in its entirety to become a Certified i-SAFE Train-The-Trainer.
